  • Does your organization have a steady stream of sellable stuff? It may be time to think about creating a year-round retail business on eBay.
  • What is an online storefront?

Nonprofits with a dependable supply of in-kind donations or access to merchandise may want to consider opening an online store on eBay.
  • One type of online storefront is an eBay Store. For several years, Friends of the Lexington Public Library has been successfully running one that specializes in used books. Check out their store External Link to get a better idea of what one looks like.
  • Why open an online storefront?

  • It stays open 24/7/365: Which means your fundraising never has to stop.
  • Raise more than a brick-and-mortar store: Anyone from Dayton to Dresden can bid up the sale price of your items.
  • Job training opportunities: Does your nonprofit train people for the workforce? An online store can dovetail with your mission. Have clients list items, take photos, and ship. They’ll learn transferable work skills while helping your nonprofit build a business.
  • How it works

If you open an online storefront, you’ll list items as a Nonprofit Direct Seller. The basics of running your store are similar to what you learned in the Turn in-kind Donations into Cash section. However, because your store will operate year-round, there are some differences to think about:
  • How will you staff it: Volunteers or paid employees? What about holidays?
  • Who will manage it: Someone needs to be minding the store and looking after the money. Is that you?
  • Sales tax and UBIT: Get a lawyer, an accountant and get familiar with the rules around these.
  • Customer service: Answering questions, shipping items, and handling returns.
  • Scaling up: Do you need a physical space for storage? Better Internet access? A photo studio? Higher volume sales can require a stronger infrastructure.
  • Get more with an eBay Store

If you’re really serious about setting up shop on eBay, you will want to consider using eBay Stores. You can display all your listings—regardless of format—in one convenient location. You can also brand your eBay Store with a unique web site address and customizable templates.
